Haymarket

Haymarket's start dates back to 1799 when the Virginia General Assembly chartered the Town of Haymarket on the land of William Skinker. The official plan laid out for the Town consisted of 140 lots and 13 streets. Almost immediately, Haymarket was selected as the site for the new District Court that would serve Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier, and Prince William Counties. The beloved district court did not last long, as in 1807, the Virginia General Assembly abolished the District Court system in favor of a Circuit Court system. On November 4, 1862, during the Civil War, Federal troops invaded the Town and set the entire Town ablaze. Only four buildings were spared from the fire, St. Paul's Church (formerly the district courthouse) and three small houses nearby. Following the war, Haymarket began to recover and slowly but surely regained its size and prosperity.

Haymarket's close-knit community is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The Town hosts various events throughout the year, including Haymarket Day, a hometown street festival that includes a parade, local food, craft vendors, and live music. Haymarket Farmers Market runs yearly on Sundays from April to November. These festivals, parades, and farmers' markets provide wonderful opportunities for residents to come together.

The natural beauty surrounding Haymarket is another highlight of living in the area. The Town is nestled amidst the rolling hills of Virginia's Piedmont region, offering breathtaking views. Residents can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding in the nearby Bull Run Mountains and the stunning Shenandoah National Park, both just a short drive away. Those who want closer outdoor recreation opportunities can check out Silver Lake Regional Park. Silver Lake is an impressive 230 acres of rolling meadows, pine forests, and a 23-acre lake fed by Little Bull Run Stream.

Calling all golf enthusiasts and wine lovers! The Town boasts several top-notch golf courses, providing ample opportunities for both recreational and competitive golfers. Courses such as the Piedmont ClubEvergreen Country ClubDominion Valley Country Club, and Bull Run Golf Club offer beautifully manicured fairways, challenging holes, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. In addition to golf, Haymarket is known for its proximity to some excellent wineries and vineyards. One local favorite is The Winery at La Grange, a 20-acre working winery and vineyard set on a historic farm.
